Navratri Vrat

The auspicious 9 days of Navratri are right around the corner and all you spiritual sanguines are probably thinking about fasting. Although some of them fast for religious reasons, this could also be a time for you to detox the body and cut back on calories.

This inner journey towards bliss doesn’t have to be dull and boring. Rekindle your digestive fire with fun fasting friendly recipes for your Vrat. These recipes are light on your digestion and also helps to attain much-needed peace and tranquillity by keeping your mind and body away from the toxins of everyday life.


1.Chawal Dokla

Some of you are either on a fruit fast or will be planning to break your fast at night. Beat your mid-day cravings with spicy dhokla made out of samwat chawal (millet).

Ingredients

  • Samwat Chawal - ¾ cup
  • Sour yoghurt - 1 cup
  • Ginger paste - 1 tsp
  • Green chilli paste for taste
  • Salt - 1 tsp
  • Ghee - 2 tsp
  • Red pepper - 2
  • Curry leaves - 3-5
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Grated coconut and coriander for garnish

Directions

  • Add the rice to the pan and lightly roast it. Make sure you remove it before it turns brown
  • Prepare a mixture of rice, yoghurt, ginger paste, chillie and salt. Leave it for fermentation overnight
  • Grease a tin with ghee and add the batter into it
  • Place the tin into a steamer and cook for 20 minutes
  • Once done, add red pepper, cumin and curry leaf to the hot ghee. Once it sizzles, pour it on the dhokla
  • Garnish with coconut and coriander and serve

Kuttu Poori Recipe

Crispy and tasty pooris made with buckwheat flour for fasting. One plus point is that, it is also gluten-free and vegan. With a tinge of nutty flavour, they almost taste like the regular pooris.

Ingredients

  • Kuttu Atta - 2 cups
  • Potato - 1
  • Salt - 1 tsp
  • Water - 1 cup

Directions

  • Add 2 cups of kutta atta to a bowl and boil the potatoes
  • Once the potatoes are done, smash and add them to the bowl
  • Knead the dough smoothly by adding water and salt propotionately
  • Cover and keep it aside for 30 minutes
  • Make it into small balls, flatten and deep fry them into small puffs

Banana Walnut Lassi

This drink holds true to the fact that different cultures and the diversity of flavours make up Indian dishes. Who would have thought that a walnut from the west blends well with our regional lassi?

Ingredients

  • Low-fat yoghurt - 1 cup
  • Banana - ½
  • Walnuts - 3 or 4
  • Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Honey - 1 tp

Directions

  • In a mixer add walnuts, cut banana, whey powder, yoghurt, flax seeds, sesame seeds and honey
  • Blend all the ingredients to a smooth consistency
  • Garnish with chopped walnuts before serving

Banana Kebab

Remeber that line in Avengers: infinity wars when Elizabeth Olsen says “ We will deep fry your kebab” This deep-fried tea time beauty is sure to follow that memo.

Ingredients

  • Raw Banana - 250 g
  • Black cardamom - 1
  • Kuttu atta - ¼ cup
  • Salt a pinch
  • Coriander seeds - 2 tsp
  • Chilli powder - ½ tsp
  • Lemon juice - 2 tsp
  • Green chilli - 1
  • Chopped corriander - 2 tsp
  • Ghee - 2 tsp

Directions

  • Steam the raw bananas, ginger and elaichi together till soft
  • Once the bananas are cool, mash them and add the rest of the ingredients
  • Shape it into small cylinders or as balls. Whatever shape is more appetising for you
  • Fry the kabab in a pan with ghee. Serve once brown on both sides

5. Farali Rajgira Kadhi

This recipe will be ready in 15 minutes so if you are getting antsy from all the fasting and need a quick fix that gives you energy. This kadhi with amaranth seeds will be super healthy and nutritious.

Ingredients

  • Plain yoghurt - 1 cup
  • Amaranth Flour - 1 tsp
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Crushed peanuts - 2 tsp
  • Ghee - 1 tsp
  • Green chilli - 2
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Ginger paste - ½ tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Corriander to garnish

Directions

  • First add the flour, yoghurt, salt and water. Stir them till there are no lumps
  • Heat ghee and add cumin, green chillies add ginger paste. Once sizzle pour it in the kadhi pan and cook for 30 seconds
  • Add the crushed peanuts and keep it in the boil for 7-8 minutes
  • Once cooked, garnish and dig in!
