Solving Leftover Bread Problems
Hands-up if you have been guilty of buying too much bread and not knowing what to do with it before it goes stale! My hands are definitely up as I often find that not only is my bread going bad, but so are my ideas.
Let us refresh our insights and learn how to make better use of these leftover slices of bread other than just boring old sandwiches.
Here are some creative ways to answer the question- ‘What to do with too much bread’?
1. Bread Pudding
This is an easy, wonderful way of using day-old bread. Bread pudding is one old-fashioned dessert you can enjoy with some gorgeous ice-cream.
Just take a loaf of old bread, 5 large eggs, 4 cups milk, 1 cup granulated sugar and a splash of vanilla extract and spices of your choice. (We suggest some cinnamon and nutmeg). Spray your pan with cooking spray and line the bottom with 1-inch pieces of bread. Mix all the other ingredients and pour over the bread. Make sure it is evenly coated and pre-heat the oven to 117°C. Let it sit for 15 min before putting it in the oven for 45 min. Your inviting treat is ready to eat!
2. Bread Crumbs
Bread crumbs are an excellent option for your leftovers. You may use it to top-off your savoury baked dishes, mac and cheese and even in salads.
Use a 10-ounce loaf, 1/4th cup olive oil, 1 tbsp garlic powder and salt and pepper to make this easy recipe. Break the loaf of bread into chunks and put it into a food processor till crumbs form. Sprinkle an adequate quantity of olive oil and seasoning and voila!
3. Breakfast Toast
Spruce up your breakfast toast with some spreads, cheeses, herbs or meats to get a delicious and healthy meal. You can add some nuts and seeds or even fruit to add a healthy nourishing touch! One such idea is using a multigrain slice of bread. Toast it lightly and spread some natural unsweetened peanut butter on it. Cut up a banana and spread the pieces evenly. You may drizzle some honey on top and add some chia seeds or walnuts for texture -You cannot go wrong with this one.
4. French Toast
If you are looking for a quick meal and have a stack of unused bread, this could be the recipe for you- For 4 slices of bread, take ¼ cup milk, 1 egg, 1 tsp vanilla extract and ½ tsp ground cinnamon (optional). Whip the egg with vanilla and cinnamon. Stir in the milk until uniform. Coat both sides of the bread evenly by dipping it in the mixture. Cook both sides on a non-stick pan till golden brown and the aromatic dish is all done. Serve with honey or nuts to accentuate the flavour.
Use whole wheat bread to make these superb additions for your soups and salads. It can give your dishes a crunch while maintaining your health. Cut your bread into 1-inch pieces to fill 4 cups. Toss them with freshly minced garlic, herbs and spices. Slow-bake this at 149°C for 40 min, stirring every 10 min. Your crispy cubes can now be served hot!
6. Bread Roll
You can make your version of a bread roll with what’s left on the shelf – Get innovative and create stuffed bread rolls like this one. Boil potato, carrots and peas till mushy. Mash them all up and shape them as needed. Roll out your sliced bread till it is a thin layer and place the stuffing inside. Seal the edges with a mixture of flour and water (consistency should be runny). Fry them on both sides until golden brown and try it with different sauces of your choice.
Try this recipe- Take 1 small onion chopped finely, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 pounds of your choice of meat, ¼ cup dry breadcrumbs, 1 tsp mustard, 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce, ¼ cup grated parmesan, 2 tbsp mayonnaise and 1 large egg, beaten lightly. Heat the oven to 350°F. Place the pan on medium heat and add the onion and seasoning. Add the garlic and cook till golden. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the ingredients, except the egg. Using your hands, add the onion-garlic mixture as well as the egg until just combined. Shape them into 1.5-in meatballs and bake for 15-20 min. Let it cool and they are ready to serve up!
TThis is a delicious bake in which you can put all your leftover bread and turn it into something unrecognizable.
Start with a buttered baking dish and cover the bottom with bite-sized pieces of bread. Use half volume of milk and half volume of eggs to form a liquid base. Flavour it with spices and herbs like rosemary and thyme. Add grated cheese on top. Heat the oven to 300°F and cover with foil and bake for 20 mins. Uncover it and bake again for 15-20 mins. 9. Bread Pakora
Reminiscing over the aroma that used to come from my mum’s kitchen, this is the perfect recipe to take you back to your childhood. You will need boiled potato, besan, coriander leaves, green chillis and grated ginger. Cut brown bread diagonally and keep aside. All the other ingredients can be mixed in the bowl. Add some water till the mixture sticks to the back of a spoon. Dip the slices into the mixture and deep fry it in hot oil till it is golden brown. It is now fully done and ready to be eaten with some tangy ketchup.
